Confirmation for Adults

Catholic adults who have received Baptism, First Communion, and First Reconciliation, and who are active in the practice of their faith, but who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to do so.
     In the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the normal pastoral practice has been to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with adults at special Masses throughout the Archdiocese on the Epiphany of the Lord Sunday or Pentecost Sunday.
     The guidelines for Confirmation sacramental preparation have been revised recently. Currently, the preparation includes an interview with the coordinator, a mini-retreat, and six classes (immediate preparation for the Sacrament). The classes are usually scheduled during September, October, November, and December.  Confirmation is typically on the Epiphany of the Lord in January and on Pentecost.
     For adults who desire a more in-depth preparation, the Archdiocese and Sacred Heart Parish offer “proximate” preparation for the Sacrament. The proximate topics include: Jesus: True God and True Man; Jesus: Our Model of Prayer; Old Testament; New Testament; Paschal Mystery; The Sacraments; The Mass; The Beatitudes; The Church; and Our Call to Discipleship.

Sacred Heart's Preparation for Confirmation as an Adult includes:

  • an initial meeting to fill out the discernment form in home parish;

  • a one-afternoon retreat, and

  • six formation classes.
